Independent Medical Evaluator
One of my activities which has made me a better doctor is my work as a medical expert. I have been called on frequently over the past 20 years to offer medical-legal opinions regarding medical malpractice cases. This has provided me with a unique insight into the patterns of thinking among doctors in my specialty and the decisions they make in various clinical settings. It has challenged me to improve my communication skills since ultimately I am faced with the task of educating attorneys in layman.s terms based on my findings from the medical records. These communication skills become very important during legal testimonies including reports, depositions, and trials. The lessons learned from these cases gets back to my philosophy about practicing medicine, which is that it requires sufficient time, interest, and experience to be an effective doctor.
